How do I adjust the travel limits on my garage door opener?
Find the limit adjusters on the motor head: older openers have two screw dials marked Up and Down, where one full turn changes travel about 2 inches; newer LiftMaster and Genie units program limits with buttons instead. Adjust in small increments, cycle the door after each change, and always finish by confirming the door reverses off a 2x4 laid flat under it.
Know Which Style You Have
Travel limits tell the opener where "fully open" and "fully closed" live. Three generations of hardware handle it differently:
- Screw dials (roughly pre-2011): two plastic screws on the side or back of the motor head, labeled Up/Open and Down/Close, adjusted with a flathead screwdriver. Clockwise generally increases travel in that direction. Work in quarter turns; a full turn moves the stopping point about 2 inches on LiftMaster chain drives.
- Button programming (Security+ 2.0 era, 2011 onward): a black adjustment button plus up and down arrows behind the light lens. Hold the black button until the up arrow flashes, drive the door to the exact open position with the arrows, press the black button to save, and repeat for the close position. No screwdriver involved.
- Genie screw drives: many use limit clamps on the rail itself, small collars that slide and lock where the carriage should stop. Loosen, slide an inch at a time, retighten.
Match the Symptom to the Adjustment

Second, the beam test: close the door and wave a broom through the photo-eye beam; the door must reverse instantly.
