What thermal bow is and why dark colors trigger it

Steel expands as it heats. On a single-layer door, only the outside skin exists, and when the sun-facing surface runs 60 to 80 degrees hotter than the shaded garage side, the panel curves toward the heat like a bimetal strip. Black, bronze, and deep walnut finishes absorb far more solar energy than white or sandstone; on a 98-degree OKC afternoon we've measured dark door skins over 160 degrees. The bow itself is elastic, meaning the door straightens as it cools, but a door that cycles bowed can suffer permanent damage: stressed hinge stiles, cracked paint at section joints, and rollers worn from riding the track at an angle.

How the problem shows up

• The door binds, rubs, or reverses only on hot afternoons, then behaves fine at 9 p.m.
• A visible gap opens at the top center of the closed door while the corners stay tight, letting light (and hot air) in.
• The opener strains mid-travel and the safety sensors seem flaky in the afternoon heat.

Choosing dark without the drama

Manufacturers know this physics, and several void warranties on dark colors for single-layer models while fully warranting them on insulated ones. The fix is construction, not color restraint:

• Polyurethane sandwich doors keep the inner and outer skins thermally coupled through the foam, cutting bow to a fraction. This is our standard recommendation for any dark door on a west-facing Edmond or Norman elevation.
• Reflective pigment finishes, used in many modern dark and faux-woodgrain paint systems, absorb noticeably less heat than older flat blacks.
• An added strut across the top section stiffens the worst-affected span on an existing door for modest cost.
