How do I erase all remotes from my garage door opener after moving in?

The Full Move-In Reset, in Order

Closing day in Moore or Norman usually comes with two remotes in a kitchen drawer and zero information about how many others exist. Sellers hand out spares to relatives, house sitters, contractors and old roommates for years. Here is the complete reset, which takes about ten minutes:

• 1. Wipe the radio memory. On the motor head, press and hold the Learn button. After about 6 seconds the LED next to it turns off (LiftMaster and Chamberlain) or blinks and clears (Genie: hold until the round LED goes dark). Release. Every transmitter is now orphaned, including the ones you cannot account for.
• 2. Kill the old keypad PIN. The wipe removes the keypad too. Re-program it fresh with a PIN the previous owner never knew. Skip birthdays and the street address, which is the first guess anyone makes.
• 3. Re-pair your remotes. Short-press Learn, then press each remote within 30 seconds, one at a time. Details are in our remote programming walkthrough.
• 4. Reset the smart side separately. The Learn button does not touch Wi-Fi accounts. On myQ-equipped LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, hold the black Wi-Fi/gear button until the blue LED blinks to factory-reset the connection, then claim the opener under your own account. Genie's Aladdin Connect works the same way through its app.
• 5. Retrain HomeLink in any car you bought used. The previous driver's garage may still be one button-press away, and yours should be added fresh.

What the Wipe Does Not Fix

Two leftovers survive a memory wipe. First, an emergency key release on the outside of the garage (the small round cylinder above the door on garages without a service door): if you did not get that key at closing, have the cylinder swapped. Second, a pre-1993 DIP-switch opener has no memory to wipe at all; its code lives on physical switches that anyone who ever saw the remote could copy. Change the switch pattern immediately or, better, budget for a modern unit, since those openers also predate photo-eye safety sensors. When to Have a Pro Do the Reset

If the Learn LED never lights, the button crumbles when pressed (common on sun-baked 20-year-old units), or the opener re-accepts a mystery remote after a wipe, the receiver or board is faulty and a professional opener service visit is the fix.
