Why does my garage door bounce back up when it hits the floor?

A door that touches the floor and reverses thinks it hit an obstruction. Either the close-limit is set a hair too far, the down-force is too sensitive, or a stiff, worn bottom seal is triggering the reversal. The Opener Thinks the Floor Is an Intruder

  • Older units (roughly pre-2011): plastic screw dials on the motor head labeled Down/Close Limit and Down Force. Turn the limit screw in small increments, a quarter turn at a time, cycling the door between adjustments. Chasing it with big turns overshoots in both directions.
  • Newer LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie units: limits are programmed with buttons and arrows, and force is self-calibrating on many models; the fix is often re-running the travel-learning sequence so the opener re-measures the floor.
  • The right end state: door seals firmly with the bottom rubber slightly compressed, no daylight at the corners, and it reverses promptly when you place a 2x4 flat under it.
