Repair & Troubleshooting

Why is one side of my garage door higher than the other?

Quick Answer

A garage door hanging higher on one side means one lift cable has frayed, snapped, or jumped its drum, or one extension spring has broken. Stop using the door immediately: running it crooked jams rollers, bends tracks, and can drop the door. Cable repairs are a same-day fix across the OKC metro, and estimates are free.

What Makes a Door Go Crooked

A sectional garage door is lifted from both bottom corners at once by cables that wind onto drums at each end of the torsion shaft. The whole system only works if both sides rise in lockstep. When the door cocks sideways, one side has lost its lift:

  • A snapped or frayed cable. Lift cables are stranded steel, and they wear where they wrap the drum. Rust from a leaky bottom seal accelerates it. When one lets go, that corner drops.
  • A cable off its drum. If the door hits an obstruction or the cable slackens for a moment, it can jump its grooves and wrap unevenly, effectively shortening one side.
  • A broken extension spring. On older doors with springs stretched along the horizontal tracks, each side has its own spring. One breaks, that side goes limp. Plenty of pre-2000 homes in Del City, Warr Acres, and older Norman neighborhoods still run extension setups.
  • Slipped drum set screws. Rare but real: the set screws anchoring a drum to the shaft loosen, and that drum stops turning with its partner.

Why One More Cycle Is a Bad Bet

A crooked door binds in its tracks. Force it and the low-side rollers plow against the rail while the high side twists the panels, and the likely outcomes escalate fast: bent track, cracked panel end stiles, or the door racking hard enough to jump the tracks entirely. We have seen a minor cable job turn into a full door replacement because the homeowner cycled a crooked door a few more times to get the car out. If the car is trapped and the door is visibly crooked, treat it as an emergency; that is exactly what our 24/7 emergency service exists for, and there is no after-hours surcharge anywhere in the metro.

Unplug the opener, leave the door where it sits, and keep people away from the opening. A door hanging crooked is a door with stored energy behaving unpredictably. If it slams shut on its own, that confirms the counterbalance is gone; our answer on doors that slam shut explains why that happens.

The Repair: Quicker and Cheaper Than It Looks

The fix is straightforward for a tech with the right winding bars: secure the door, unwind spring tension, reset or replace the cables, re-level the door, and re-tension. Cables are always replaced in pairs, since the surviving one has the same age and wear. Cable jobs are quick, budget-friendly visits across Oklahoma City, Edmond, Yukon, and surrounding towns. If a spring broke, spring replacement gets bundled into the same visit, and if the crooked cycling bent track or rollers, straightforward repair work covers those too. Most crooked-door calls are diagnosed, quoted with a free estimate, and finished inside 90 minutes.

Why won't my garage door stay open on its own?+

A door that drifts down has lost spring tension, either from age or an outright break. The springs, not the opener, hold the door's weight, and a one-minute balance test with the release cord confirms it. Read the full answer →

Why won't my garage door close when the sun is shining on it?+

Direct sun can blind a photo-eye sensor, making the opener think something is blocking the door. Sun shields, careful realignment, or swapping the sender and receiver to opposite sides usually fixes it for good. Read the full answer →

When is a garage door problem an emergency and when can it wait?+

A car trapped inside, a door stuck open, or a door off its tracks counts as an emergency. Noise, slow operation, and cosmetic damage can usually wait for a scheduled visit, and our after-hours calls cost the same as daytime ones. Read the full answer →
