Steel, nylon, and what each costs
Rollers look interchangeable but behave very differently over a 15,000-cycle life:

Most of the invoice is labor, and for a reason worth knowing: the bottom rollers sit in brackets attached to the lift cables, which are under full spring tension. Swapping those two rollers safely requires locking the door and relieving tension properly. The middle and top rollers are straightforward; the bottom pair is where DIY attempts get people hurt. If your hinges are cracked, replacing them at the same visit adds very little since the labor overlaps.
How to know your rollers are done
- Grinding or popping as the door moves, especially through the track curve
- Visible wobble in a roller stem when the door runs
- Flat spots or cracks on nylon wheels, rust on steel ones
- A door that shudders sideways instead of tracking smoothly
Oklahoma is hard on open-bearing rollers specifically. Red-dirt dust infiltrates the bearings and grinds them from the inside, and garages near unpaved sections in Piedmont, Tuttle and eastern Choctaw see it fastest.
