Are garage door springs covered by warranty?

The three layers of possible coverage

Manufacturer warranty on a new door. When you buy a complete door from brands like CHI, DoorLink, or Haas, the panels might carry a limited lifetime finish warranty while the hardware, springs included, gets a shorter window, commonly 1 to 3 years. Premium series sometimes bundle longer spring coverage, especially when high-cycle springs are part of the package. The panel warranty getting the headline while springs live in a footnote is the industry norm, so ask specifically.

Installer workmanship warranty. This is the coverage that actually gets used. It pays when a spring was sized wrong, wound wrong, or failed unreasonably early, and it covers the labor that manufacturer terms usually exclude. When we handle a spring replacement, the parts and the workmanship are both backed in writing, and because we are local, a claim is a phone call, not a shipping label to a factory in another state.

Extended or high-cycle options. Upgrading to 25,000-cycle springs does two things: the spring physically lasts longer, and companies are willing to warranty it longer because the math works. If a salesperson offers a "lifetime spring warranty" on a standard 10,000-cycle spring, read whether it covers labor and trip charges on each swap. A free spring that still bills you for labor every few years is a subscription, not a warranty.

What is never covered

• Cycle wear-out. A 10,000-cycle spring that breaks after 9 years of faithful service did its job. See what cycle ratings mean for the math.
• Homeowners insurance. Policies cover sudden covered perils, like the door being crushed in a hailstorm or hit by a vehicle, both real scenarios in Oklahoma. A fatigued spring is classified as wear and tear. The exception: if a spring failure is part of storm damage (a May windstorm racking the door, for example), the whole assembly may fold into the storm claim.
• DIY installs and third-party parts. Springs you bought online and installed yourself carry a parts-only warranty at best, and most suppliers void it if installation was not professional.

Filing a claim without the runaround

Keep the invoice. It documents the install date, the spring specs, and the coverage terms, which is exactly what a warranty conversation needs. If a spring we installed fails inside its coverage window anywhere in our 21-city service area, from Piedmont to Purcell, we replace it under the terms on that invoice. If another company installed it and will not stand behind it, we can still help: our assessment is free, and if the failure points to mis-sizing we will document it, which some homeowners have used to get refunds from the original installer.
