Why is the garage door the weakest point of a house in high winds?

The physics working against your door

Walls resist wind with studs every 16 inches, sheathing, and brick. A 16-foot garage door resists it with steel skins thinner than a coffee can, a few horizontal struts, and rollers riding in track that's screwed to a wood jamb. Wind load grows with the square of wind speed, so a gust jumping from 60 to 85 mph roughly doubles the pressure on that span. Under negative pressure (suction), the door can also pull outward and pop its rollers right out of the track. Either direction, the panels hinge and fold because that's what they're designed to do vertically, just not horizontally.

The failure chain, step by step

• 1. The door flexes. Sections bow inward between the tracks; on unreinforced doors this starts around 60 to 70 mph gusts.
• 2. Rollers leave the track or panels buckle. The door collapses inward, sometimes onto vehicles.
• 3. The house pressurizes. Wind now blows into a sealed box. Internal pressure adds to the suction already lifting the roof exterior.
• 4. The envelope fails. Roof decking peels, gable ends push out, and water follows for hours afterward.

Post-storm surveys after hurricanes and plains windstorms alike put garage door failure at or near the top of the list of entry points for catastrophic damage. It's why FEMA's residential wind guidance singles the door out, and why Moore rewrote its code around a 135 mph standard after 2013.

Breaking the chain in OKC's wind climate
