Length kills motors faster than weight does

Gate operator ratings list a maximum length and a maximum weight, and the length number is the one people ignore. A 16-foot gate puts its mass far from the hinge, so every gust of Oklahoma wind and every start-stop cycle works the actuator through a long lever arm. That is why a 400-pound, 16-foot pipe gate destroys a big-box opener rated "up to 850 lb" but only 12 feet: the weight was fine, the leverage was not. Power: solar is usually the right call out here

Trenching 400 feet of conduit from the house to the road can cost more than the operator. A properly sized solar setup, 30 to 60 watts of panel facing south with 35Ah or larger batteries, will cycle a ranch gate 20+ times a day through an Oklahoma winter.
