Why are my garage door cables loose and hanging slack?
Three causes explain nearly every slack cable: a broken or weakened spring (most common), a cable that jumped off its drum, or a door that came down on an obstruction and kept unwinding. Cables have no tension of their own; springs keep them tight. Stop using the door and get it inspected before the cable tangles or the door drops.
Cables are the messengers, springs are the muscle
The lift cables on each side of your door do not pull anything by themselves. They transmit force from the spring-driven drums at the top down to the bottom brackets. When a spring holds proper tension, the cables stay guitar-string tight through the whole travel. The moment you see droop, a loop, or a cable dangling like a jump rope, the tension source upstream has failed or the cable has left its track on the drum. That is a diagnosis, not a cosmetic issue.
Running down the three causes
1. Broken or dying spring. This is the answer roughly eight times out of ten in our OKC service logs. A snapped torsion spring dumps all cable tension instantly. Look above the door for a 2-inch gap in the coil, described in how to spot a broken spring. A badly relaxed galvanized spring can produce mild slack at certain door positions too.
2. Cable jumped the drum. Each drum has machined grooves the cable must sit in. If the door bounces (hitting the floor hard, an opener with the down-force cranked, or an ice-swollen weather seal stopping the door early), the cable can momentarily go slack, then rewind outside its grooves or wrap over itself. One side ends up short, the door racks crooked, and the loose side droops. This one is sneaky because the springs are fine.
3. Door closed onto an obstruction. A shovel handle, a basketball, a trash bin lip, or a hard ice ridge along the threshold, an Oklahoma winter classic. The door stops early but the opener or the drums keep paying out cable for the missing inches of travel, and the slack appears at the bottom.
What not to do while it hangs slack
- Do not hit the opener button "to see if it fixes itself." Cycling a slack-cable door is how cables shred, doors rack, and openers strip gears.
- Do not pull the red emergency release with the door open. If a spring is broken, the door can free-fall the moment the trolley lets go.
- Do not rewind a cable onto a drum by hand. The drums are locked to a shaft that may still hold full spring tension; loosening a set screw with tension on the shaft is a hand injury waiting to happen.
The repair and what to expect
If the cause is a jumped drum with undamaged parts, the fix is resetting the cable and rebalancing the door, which is the least involved of the three repairs.
