How much does it cost to fix a garage door that came off its track?

Answered by the Affordable Door Co team · Updated March 14, 2026

Quick Answer

If the rollers simply jumped out and nothing is bent, an off-track reset is one of the least expensive repairs we do in the OKC metro — a short service call, no parts. Bent track sections, snapped cables and crushed rollers each add parts and labor, and a full cable-failure cascade is the worst case, though still far less than a new door. Whatever you do, stop operating the door: every extra cycle multiplies the damage and the bill.

The price depends on what came off, and why

"Off track" describes symptoms ranging from one roller sitting outside its channel to a 300-pound door hanging diagonally by a single cable. Cost follows the cause:

  • Simple derailment — the most budget-friendly tier. One or two rollers popped out, often after the door met a trash can or the track bolts loosened over time. The tech secures the door, reseats the rollers, checks alignment and tightens everything. Labor only, no parts.
  • Impact with bent track — a step up. The classic bumper-meets-door move. Vertical track sections are inexpensive as parts go; the labor is in re-plumbing them so the door does not bind.
  • Cable failure cascade — the top of the range. A frayed cable lets go, the door racks sideways, rollers grenade and track lips bend outward. Now the job includes cables, several rollers, possible track and a full rebalance — still a fraction of what a replacement door would run.

On our repair calls the quote is written on site before any work starts, and the visit itself is free.

Why a hanging door is a genuine emergency

A sectional door that has jumped its track is being held by whatever is left: one cable, a jammed roller, sometimes just friction. Doors in this state have dropped without warning, and a 16-foot insulated door can weigh over 350 pounds. Keep people, pets and cars away from the opening, do not pull the red release cord (it may be the only thing holding tension in a controlled way), and do not run the opener "to see if it will straighten out." It will not, and openers are strong enough to fold panels while trying.

Because a garage you cannot close is also a security problem, we treat off-track doors as priority calls under our 24/7 emergency service, with no after-hours surcharge anywhere in the metro. Most nights we can have the opening secured within the hour.

Keeping it from happening twice

Repeat derailments almost always trace to something upstream: worn rollers with wobbling stems, loose lag bolts in Oklahoma's shifting clay-soil garages, or a door knocked out of balance so the opener drags it crooked. Two habits prevent most of them. First, leave a few extra inches when parking; the majority of off-track calls we run in Edmond and Norman start with a light bumper tap. Second, an annual maintenance visit catches loose track hardware and tired rollers for a small fraction of what a derailment repair costs; see our answer on tune-ups for what that includes.
