Can my existing swing gate be automated?
Usually yes. A gate qualifies for automation if it passes three checks: it swings its full arc by hand with light effort, the hinges are tight with no sag, and the posts do not flex when you push the open end. Steel and aluminum gates convert readily; heavy wood and sagging gates need repair first. A complete residential package is scoped around gate length and weight, operator duty rating, access controls, and whether power already reaches the gate — free, no-pressure estimates at (405) 247-0336.
The three-point test we run at every estimate
Before quoting an operator, our techs grade the gate itself, because an operator can only automate what a person could move easily:
- Free swing. Open the gate by hand through its whole travel. If it takes more than one-hand effort, drags at any point, or the latch end sits lower than the hinge end, the operator will spend its life compensating and trip its force limits constantly. Sag gets fixed with hinge adjustment, a truss rod, or a wheel deleted and rehung geometry.
- Hinge health. Automation multiplies hinge cycles enormously; a gate that got opened twice a day may cycle twenty times daily once opening it is effortless. Worn barrel hinges get replaced with greaseable or bearing hinges during conversion, a modest line item next to the operator itself that prevents the most common callback.
- Post rigidity. The operator anchors to the hinge post (swing arm designs) or a pad beside it. Wood posts and shallow-set pipe move, and movement translates into misaligned limits and premature arm wear. The honest fix, resetting a proper steel post in concrete, adds materials and a day of cure time but makes everything downstream reliable.
What the conversion package includes
Automating a sound gate is a one-day job in most cases. A complete installation covers the operator sized to your gate length and weight, monitored photo eyes and any needed edge sensors to meet UL 325 (details in our sensor requirements answer), a receiver with remotes, and your choice of keypad or phone-based access. Power is the fork in the road: if an outlet or circuit exists within reasonable trenching distance, low-voltage wiring finishes the job; on rural runs around Choctaw, Harrah, and Newcastle, a solar package usually beats trenching on price.
When we advise replacing the gate instead
Roughly one estimate in five, we tell the owner to put money into the gate before the automation. The flags: rot or rust-through at the frame joints, a double-leaf wood gate heavy enough to need commercial operators on both leaves, an opening so far out of square the leaves cannot meet cleanly, or a gate under 4 feet from the road where a car waiting on it blocks traffic (a layout problem automation makes worse, and one reason to consider the slide gate geometry in our space requirements answer). A new fabricated steel gate plus automation is naturally a bigger project than automating a sound gate — the gate is custom-built to the opening — and financing through our financing page spreads it out. Either way the estimate is free, and if you just want the existing setup diagnosed, gate services covers repair, maintenance, and upgrades in one visit.

Related Questions
How much space does a sliding gate need?+
Budget fence-line room equal to the opening plus 4 to 5 feet of tail, and about 1.5 times the opening for cantilever designs. Sites without that run-off space are usually better served by swing or bi-fold gates. Read the full answer →
Why does my automatic gate open by itself?+
Common triggers are a neighbor's remote on the same frequency, chafed control wiring shorting intermittently, a corroded exit probe firing on its own, and insect nests inside the control cabinet. Receiver logs and isolation testing find the culprit fast. Read the full answer →
Can I open my driveway gate from my phone?+
Yes. Wi-Fi and cellular gate controllers add app control, guest passes, and open/close history to most operators, old or new. Hardware plus installation depends on the controller you choose and how good the cell or Wi-Fi signal is at the gate. Read the full answer →
