How much space does a sliding gate need?
Clear fence line beside the opening equal to the opening width plus about 4 to 5 feet, minimum. A 16-foot opening therefore needs roughly 20 to 21 feet of straight, level run-off space. Cantilever gates, the trackless type that handles Oklahoma ice best, need about 1.5 times the opening because the counterbalance tail travels with the gate. No run-off room means a swing, bi-fold, or vertical pivot gate instead.

Beyond length, check the strip is straight and reasonably level. A slide gate cannot follow a fence that bends, and grades over about 3 to 5 percent along the travel path complicate both track and cantilever designs. Width-wise, keep 18 to 24 inches of clear depth behind the fence line for the gate frame, rollers, and operator.
Why cantilever earns its extra footage here
V-track gates roll on wheels in a steel track set in concrete, and that track is a debris magnet. Around the metro our winter service calls spike with V-track gates frozen to their rails or jumped off after riding over sleet-crusted gravel. A cantilever gate floats the whole leaf a couple of inches off the ground from rollers mounted on posts, so there is nothing at grade to foul. The price is that counterbalance tail: a 16-foot opening needs a gate panel roughly 24 feet long. If your fence line has the room, cantilever is what we recommend for nearly every commercial site and most acreages; it is also friendlier to the UL 325 safety hardware since there is no ground track creating pinch points.
What to do when the space is not there
City lots in Mesta Park or Edmond's older neighborhoods rarely offer 20 feet of spare fence line. The alternatives, in the order we usually explore them:

- Bi-fold or speed gates, which fold in half as they open and need only a few feet, at a higher hardware cost.
