• Knox key switch or padlock. The Knox system is a master-keyed rapid-entry program: your gate gets a switch or lock keyed to the local fire department's secured key, carried in every apparatus. Crews turn the key, the gate opens, no destruction. Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Moore, and most metro departments participate. Hardware plus wiring is a modest one-time investment, and the switch is ordered registered to your responding department.
• Siren-operated sensor. Devices like Click2Enter listen for the specific yelp of an emergency siren within close range and command the gate open. They cover police and EMS as well as fire, and they work at 2 a.m. without anyone leaving the cab. Common at gated communities and storage facilities across the metro.
• Strobe/optical sensors. Older tech that responds to emergency strobes; still in service, being phased out in favor of siren and Knox systems.
• Manual release and the last resort. If no device exists, crews use the operator release if they can find it, and if seconds matter, the chain, the ram bar, or the bumper. A destroyed gate and operator is an expensive lesson in why the key switch was the bargain.

What the fire code requires, and from whom

Under the International Fire Code as adopted by metro jurisdictions, gates across required fire apparatus access roads must have an approved means of emergency operation, and the fire code official decides what "approved" means locally, which in practice means Knox in most of the metro.
