What is an automatic garage door lock and do I need one?

How it works, and why a closed door is not a locked door

People assume a closed garage door is secured by the opener. In reality the only thing resisting a lift attempt is the trolley's connection to the motor, and a determined pry bar under the bottom panel can generate enough leverage to pop many doors far enough for a crawl-under. The automatic lock changes the physics: a solid bolt through the vertical track means the door cannot rise at all, pried or otherwise, until the bolt retracts. Because the opener controls the bolt, there is nothing to remember; the door locks itself on every close, and unlocks itself a half-second before every open. No key, no habit, no forgetting.

It also defeats the two entry tricks that actually happen in OKC garages:

• The lift-and-pry: bolt in track, door does not move. Full stop.

• Street-facing doors on corner lots, visible from a thoroughfare, where a pry attempt draws no neighbor attention
• Garages holding trucks, trailers, tool chests, or a shop setup; theft targets scale with contents
• Homes where the garage man-door leads inside with no deadbolt of its own
• Anyone replacing an opener anyway: the incremental cost of going wall-mount plus lock is modest at install time
