Why won't my voice assistant open the garage door?
By design. Every major platform treats opening a garage door as a high-consequence action and requires a spoken PIN or additional confirmation, while closing generally does not. The reason is that a voice command can be issued by anyone within earshot — including through a window or a door.
The asymmetry is deliberate
Closing a garage door that should not have been closed is an inconvenience. Opening one that should not have been opened is a break-in. Platforms weigh those differently, which is why "close the garage" usually just works and "open the garage" asks for a PIN.
The threat is not theoretical. A smart speaker can hear a voice through a window, from a television, or from someone standing at the door. Requiring a spoken secret closes the gap that a voice-only command would leave open.
What you can and cannot configure
- The PIN itself is set in the assistant's app and can be changed.
- Voice match helps the assistant recognize household members, but usually does not remove the PIN requirement for opening.
- Closing without a PIN is typically the default and can often be tightened if you prefer.
- Disabling the requirement entirely is generally not offered, and that is the correct decision by the platforms.
If nothing works at all
Then it is an integration problem rather than a security one. Confirm the opener is actually linked to the assistant and appears as a device, per which assistants work with which openers. Check the opener is online in its own app first — if it is offline there, the assistant has nothing to talk to, which is the situation in an opener showing offline.
Some integrations require a subscription tier for third-party assistant control, which catches people out — smart garage subscription fees.
Better ways to do the same thing
Honestly, voice is a poor interface for a garage door. The PIN removes most of the convenience, and the consequence of a misheard command is high. The automations that work better are the ones that do not require you to say anything — alerts when the door is left open, timed auto-close, and lights that follow the door, covered in which automations are actually useful.
For opening on arrival, a keypad or the app is more reliable than voice or geofencing, per geofencing caveats. Our OKC team can set up a smart opener properly — free estimates.

No, not directly. Read the full answer →
Can smart garage door openers be hacked?+
In theory yes, in practice rarely. Modern openers use rolling-code radio that changes the signal every press, and smart platforms encrypt their cloud traffic, so drive-by hacking is not a realistic threat to a current opener. Read the full answer →

Yes, but you will need add-on hardware, because no mainstream opener ships with HomeKit built in. Read the full answer →
