Can I convert my extension springs to a torsion spring system?

Yes, in most garages. You need roughly 10 to 12 inches of clear headroom above the door opening for the shaft and springs; if you have it, the conversion includes a new shaft, drums, cables, and springs, with the price driven mostly by door weight and spring count. First, which system do you have?

Extension springs are the long, skinny springs mounted above the horizontal tracks on each side, stretching and contracting as the door moves. Torsion springs are the fat coils on a steel shaft directly above the closed door. Extension setups dominated construction into the 1980s and hung on in budget builds after that, so they are still everywhere in older parts of the metro: Capitol Hill, original Del City and Bethany blocks, Britton-area bungalows, and plenty of Norman rentals near campus.

Why techs push homeowners toward torsion

  • Failure behavior. A torsion spring that breaks stays on its shaft and announces itself with a bang. An extension spring that breaks without a safety cable becomes a two-pound steel whip moving fast enough to punch through drywall, a windshield, or worse. If you keep extension springs, at minimum read why safety cables are non-negotiable.
  • Balance quality. Extension springs pull hardest when fully stretched and weakest near the floor, so the door accelerates and slams. Torsion delivers near-constant torque through the whole travel, which is why converted doors immediately feel like a better door.
  • Independent sides. Each extension spring works its own side. As they age unevenly the door racks in the opening, chewing rollers and wearing the opener. A torsion shaft moves both cables together.

What the conversion involves and costs

The job takes a crew about 2 to 3 hours: strip the old springs, pulleys, and sheave cables, install a header-mounted spring anchor bracket, shaft, end bearing plates, drums, new lift cables, and one or two torsion springs sized to the actual door weight, then wind, balance, and reset the opener force limits. The cases where conversion does not fit

Low-headroom garages are the main blocker. If the top of the door track nearly kisses the ceiling, a standard torsion shaft has nowhere to live. Options still exist: low-headroom torsion kits and rear-mount torsion setups solve many of these, though they add cost, and on a few genuinely tight garages, well-maintained extension springs with safety cables remain the practical answer. A door in poor structural shape is the other exception; putting a new spring system on a rotting or storm-racked door is money backwards, and a new door quote is worth comparing first.
