How high off the floor should garage door safety sensors be mounted?
No more than 6 inches above the floor, on both sides of the opening. That figure comes from the UL 325 safety standard and every major opener manual, and it exists so the invisible beam catches a crawling infant or a small pet. Most installers set the beam at 4 to 6 inches; higher than 6 creates a blind zone.
Where the 6-inch number comes from
UL 325, the federal safety standard every residential opener has had to meet since 1993, requires photo-eye sensors positioned so the beam runs no higher than 6 inches above the floor. The height was chosen around the smallest thing that needs protecting: a baby crawling at floor level presents a profile only a few inches tall. LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie manuals all repeat the same figure, usually recommending 4 to 6 inches from floor to the center of the lens.
We find out-of-spec sensors constantly on service calls around the metro, and there is usually a story behind them. A homeowner in Del City moved the eyes up to keep a shop vac from blocking them. A Yukon garage got a DIY epoxy floor and the brackets went back on higher. A trash can kept tripping the beam so someone "fixed" it by raising the sensors a foot. Every one of those doors would close on anything shorter than the new beam height.
Getting alignment right, not just height
Height is half the spec; the two eyes also have to point at each other precisely, since the receiving eye needs to see the sending eye's infrared beam across a 16-foot opening. Quick reference for the most common brands we service:

A flickering light usually means the bracket is bent a few degrees, a lens is dusty, or direct sun is hitting the receiver. West-facing garages in Mustang and Tuttle get an evening-sun version of this in summer: the low sun overwhelms the receiver and the door refuses to close until dusk. Swapping the sending and receiving eyes to opposite sides, or adding a small sun shade, fixes it. Wiring, brackets, and when to call it in
- Mount to the track brackets or wall framing, never to drywall alone; vibration walks screws loose.
- Keep low-voltage sensor wire stapled clear of the track and springs. Pinched wire is the top cause of sudden sensor failure we see.
- After any garage remodel or floor coating, remeasure. New flooring can raise the floor an inch or more, shrinking your margin.
