What gauge steel is best for a garage door — 24, 25, or 27?
24-gauge is the best steel skin you can buy on a standard residential door; it is roughly 40 percent thicker than 27-gauge. Remember that gauge runs backward: the lower number is the heavier metal. Steel gauge is one of the few specs where bigger sounds better but is actually worse. Here is what the numbers mean in actual metal:

A few thousandths of an inch sounds trivial until you translate it into stiffness, which scales faster than thickness. Watch for marketing sleight of hand too: some spec sheets quote nominal gauge or combine a thick skin claim with a thin interior skin.
