How do I compare garage door quotes apples to apples?

Quick Answer

Make every bidder put six numbers on paper: steel gauge, construction layers, R-value, spring cycle rating, opener model number, and labor warranty length. If a quote just says insulated 16x7, it is not comparable to anything. In OKC, identical-sounding double doors legitimately land far apart in installed price based on those six specs alone.

The six-line spec sheet every quote must show

  • 1. Exterior steel gauge in an actual number (24, 25, 26, 27), not adjectives like heavy-duty. Lower is thicker; the primer is in our gauge guide.
  • 2. Construction layers: single, double, or triple, and whether the core is polystyrene or polyurethane.
  • 3. R-value of the section, stated by the manufacturer.
  • 4. Spring cycle rating: 10,000-cycle springs are standard; a 25,000-cycle or higher upgrade adds only modestly to the bid and roughly doubles working life. This line is missing from most low bids for a reason.
  • 5. Opener model number, if included, so you can look up whether it is a retail unit or a dealer-line machine.
  • 6. Labor warranty in months, separate from the manufacturer's product warranty.

Then confirm the scope words: tear-off and haul-away, new track (never reused), new perimeter seal, and tax included. A bid missing any of these is not lower, it is unfinished. In our experience across the metro, roughly half of the surprise up-charges homeowners complain about trace back to one of those four scope items being quietly left out of the original number.

Trap phrases and what to ask when you hear them

  • "Insulated door": insulated how? A loose foam backer and a bonded polyurethane core both technically qualify, and they perform nothing alike.
  • "Lifetime warranty": on which component, for whom, and who pays labor on the claim? See our warranty reality check.
  • "Heavy-duty springs": ask for the cycle rating and wire size. Heavy-duty has no legal definition.
  • "Hardware included": roller type matters; nylon 10-ball rollers versus builder steel rollers is a night-and-day difference in noise and wear.

A real OKC example

Two recent bids a Yukon homeowner showed us, both simply "insulated 16x7 with opener" at essentially the same bottom line. Written to spec, bid A was a 27-gauge vinyl-backed door, R-6, 10,000-cycle springs, retail chain-drive opener, 90-day labor warranty. Bid B was a 25-gauge sandwich door, R-13, 25,000-cycle springs, dealer belt-drive with battery backup, one-year labor. Same price, wildly different value; the homeowner only saw it because the specs were finally on paper. That is the entire game. Every estimate we write ships with all six lines filled in, is free, and if the budget needs room, financing is a checkbox, not a renegotiation.

Are lifetime garage door warranties real or just marketing?+

Yes, they exist, and they cover the steel sections for the original owner while excluding springs, hardware, labor, and weather. Read which model tier the promise is attached to before it sways a decision. Read the full answer →

What garage door holds up best to basketballs and kids?+

The dent-proof champion is a triple-layer door with a 24-gauge outer skin; the bonded core backs the steel so basketballs bounce instead of crease. Single-layer pans mark up within one season of driveway hoops. Read the full answer →

Are vinyl or fiberglass garage doors worth considering?+

Vinyl shrugs off dents but fades and limits your style options; fiberglass turns brittle under Oklahoma UV and can crack in hail. Insulated steel remains the better all-around buy here. Read the full answer →
