Are vinyl or fiberglass garage doors worth considering?

The honest case for vinyl

Vinyl doors earned their reputation in two niches: coastal salt air, where steel eventually loses the rust war, and households that treat the door as a backboard. The skin is the same idea as vinyl fence, colored through the material, so scratches do not show primer and a basketball cannot crease it. If you run a daycare out of your Mustang home or your kids have a pitching machine, that toughness is genuinely tempting. The trade-offs arrive with the catalog: vinyl comes in a short list of pale colors (dark vinyl absorbs heat and distorts), few panel designs, and modest insulation, usually a polystyrene insert rather than a bonded core. Ten Oklahoma summers of UV also flatten the finish in a way repainting cannot fix, because paint adheres poorly to vinyl.

Where fiberglass falls apart, sometimes literally

Fiberglass sounds high-tech and photographs beautifully with woodgrain molding. The problem is our climate. UV exposure embrittles the resin over the years, and central Oklahoma delivers both intense sun and hail, a combination that turns aging fiberglass skins into potato chips. We have removed fiberglass doors in Norman and Edmond with spider cracks radiating from every impact point after a single storm. Cracked fiberglass cannot be dent-rolled or touched up like steel; the section is done. Insurers pay these claims, but you will be doing the replacement dance more often, and section availability for niche fiberglass lines is worse than for the big steel brands.

The exception where we will happily quote vinyl: high-abuse detached shops and rental duplexes where appearance ranks last and durability rules.
