What we check before hanging an opener

An opener adds convenience, not muscle. It is designed to move a door the springs already carry, so the pre-flight inspection decides everything:

• Balance test. Lifted halfway by hand, the door should float. If it slams down, the springs are weak or wrong, and connecting an opener to that door burns out gears and strains the header. A spring correction first makes the opener a happy machine for a decade.
• Track and roller condition. Manual doors that lived without maintenance often have flattened rollers and loose lags. A tune-up pass fixes that cheaply during the same visit.
• Structure above the door. The opener header bracket anchors into framing above the opening, and the rail hangs from ceiling joists. Both need sound wood, the same standard we apply in framing checks.
• Power. A ceiling outlet within about three feet of the motor head. No outlet means an electrician visit first; extension cords are a code violation and a fire inspector's least favorite thing.

Choosing the opener for how you live

We install and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and every major brand. For first-time automation in the metro, the decision tree is short:

• Chain drive: durable, the most budget-friendly, a little noisy. Fine for detached garages.
• Belt drive: the right call under bedrooms, and most of what we install in Edmond and Nichols Hills two-stories.
• Belt drive with battery backup and WiFi: the battery matters here more than most places, because Oklahoma ice storms take the power out exactly when you want the car inside. App control and open-door alerts come along free.

The one door we talk people out of automating

One-piece tilt-up doors, common on OKC homes built in the 50s and 60s, technically accept special openers. We rarely recommend it. The geometry throws the bottom edge outward as it opens, the springs on these doors are old pivot hardware with no modern safety containment, and the money spent automating a 60-year-old slab usually covers a third of a new sectional door with opener included. On those homes we quote both paths honestly; a full door-plus-opener package resets every wear part in the system at once. If budget is the constraint, financing makes the full upgrade monthly-payment sized.
