Will installers fix rotted wood framing before hanging a new garage door?
It depends on the rot. Jambs and exterior trim, yes: door installers replace those routinely as a modest add-on line in the install quote. Load-bearing rot in the header, king studs, or wall plates is carpenter territory, and a responsible door company will pause the install rather than lag brand-new tracks into punky wood.
Why rot and garage doors are enemies
The entire door system hangs on wood. Vertical tracks lag into the jambs, the spring anchor pad bolts to the header framing above the opening, and the opener bracket ties into the header as well. A torsion spring under full wind can put several hundred pounds of rotational load on its anchor pad. Lag screws hold in sound lumber; in rot they hold until the first cold morning the door sticks and the opener pulls hard. That is why our techs probe the jambs and header pad with an awl during every installation estimate. In OKC housing stock we find rot most often on south and west exposures where blown rain hits unpainted trim, on homes with sprinklers spraying the garage corner, and in pre-1985 neighborhoods like Del City, Bethany, and original Norman where jambs are untreated pine sitting near grade.

The line is load. If the wood only positions and anchors door hardware, we replace it same-day; the truck carries jamb stock. If the wood holds the house up, cutting it out is framing work with shoring and usually a permit, the same category of work described in opening modifications. We would rather push your install back a week than hang a brand-new door on framing we know is failing.
Beating the next round of rot
Since the jambs are being replaced anyway, spend a little more once:
- Composite or PVC jamb wrap. Vinyl-wrapped or cellular PVC jamb systems will not rot, ever, and cost only modestly more than bare pine on a typical double door. On a sprinkler-adjacent corner, that is the last time you touch it.
- Treated lumber at the base. The bottom 12 inches of jamb take the splash. Treated stock there is nearly free insurance.
- Seal the end grain. Rot starts where cut ends drink water. Primed and painted ends outlast bare ones by years.
- Fix the water source. Redirect the sprinkler head, extend the downspout, and keep the new weather seal maintained so water is not wicking under the jamb at the slab.
