The Right Way to Use the Red Release Cord

Every opener sold in the last several decades has a red cord hanging from the trolley on the rail. That cord disconnects the door from the motor so you can move it by hand. Here is the sequence our techs teach homeowners across the metro:

• 1. Make sure the door is fully closed. Pulling the release with the door up can send it crashing down. If your door is stuck partway open, do not pull the cord; call us instead.
• 2. Pull the red cord straight down. You will hear a click as the trolley disengages. On most LiftMaster and Chamberlain rails, pulling down and back toward the motor locks it in manual mode.
• 3. Lift the door with both hands from the bottom section. A healthy, balanced door lifts with about 10 to 15 pounds of effort and stays put wherever you leave it.
• 4. Lower it gently by hand. Never let it free-fall, and keep fingers out of the section joints.

When Manual Operation Is Not Safe

The release cord assumes your springs are doing their job. A double steel door weighs 200 pounds or more, and the springs carry nearly all of that. If you pull the release and the door will not budge, or it takes everything you have to move it a foot, a torsion spring has almost certainly snapped. Look above the door: a broken torsion spring shows a clean two-inch gap in the coil. Do not keep hauling on the door, and absolutely do not recruit a second person to muscle it up, because a door with a broken spring can slam down without warning. Reconnecting After OG&E Restores Power

When power returns, close the door fully by hand, then pull the release cord toward the opener until you hear the click, or simply press the remote; on most models the trolley glides until it snaps back into the carriage automatically. Run one complete open-close cycle and watch that the door reverses when you block a sensor.

One habit worth building: test the manual release once or twice a year.
