What are pinch-resistant garage door panels?

Watch a sectional door close and focus on the horizontal seams between panels. As each section rotates from the curved track to vertical, the joint opens like a mouth, then closes with the door's full weight behind it. Fingers resting on a seam, and it is almost always a child's fingers or an adult pulling a manual door down by the panel edge, get drawn into that closing gap. Emergency rooms nationally see thousands of these crush injuries every year, and they account for a large share of garage door amputation cases.

Pinch-resistant designs reshape both mating edges. As the joint closes, the curved profile of the upper section physically pushes anything in the gap outward before the surfaces meet. Some manufacturers market it under trade names, but the geometry idea is the same across brands: no straight scissor gap anywhere on the face of the door.

How to tell if your door has it

• Look at the seam profile from the side. Pinch-resistant joints show a pronounced S-curve or hook shape where the sections meet. Older flat-joint doors show a simple straight overlap.
• Check the door's age. Pinch-resistant profiles became widespread on quality residential doors in the early 2000s. Doors from the 1990s and earlier, still common in Bethany, Warr Acres, and older Edmond neighborhoods, almost never have them.
• Find the manufacturer sticker on the inside of an end stile and look up the model, or send us a photo and we will identify it.

Here is the good news for anyone shopping: pinch resistance is not a luxury line item.
