How do I reconnect my garage door opener after getting a new Wi-Fi router?

The shortcut nobody tells you about

Wi-Fi devices do not know or care which physical router they talk to; they only match the network name (SSID) and password. When your internet provider swaps hardware, log into the new router's admin page and rename its 2.4GHz network to your old name with the old password. Every device in the house, opener included, reconnects without touching a single app. We suggest this to every customer who calls after an internet upgrade, and it turns an evening of re-pairing thermostats, cameras, and the garage into a five-minute admin task.

The standard re-pair, brand by brand

• LiftMaster / Chamberlain (myQ): in the myQ app tap your opener, then the gear icon, then Wi-Fi settings, and follow the prompts. On most units you confirm setup mode at the motor head: press the settings/gear button until the LED blinks blue, or on older Wi-Fi models hold the black adjustment button until the unit chirps. The app hands the opener your new network credentials over a temporary direct connection.
• Genie (Aladdin Connect): app menu, door settings, Wi-Fi setup. The controller broadcasts a hotspot named "Aladdin" when you hold its network button for a few seconds; join it and pick your new network.
• Retrofit controllers (Meross, Tailwind, ismartgate): each has a reset/pair button that restarts its setup flow. Tailwind and Meross walk you through joining the device hotspot, then selecting the home network.

Universal gotchas: the opener only speaks 2.4GHz, so if the new router broadcasts one combined name for both bands and the opener refuses to join, temporarily split the bands or move your phone far enough from the router that it negotiates 2.4GHz during setup. Still offline after a correct re-pair?

Work through these in order before assuming the worst:

• Power-cycle the opener after the re-pair; some units cache the old network until rebooted.
• Check signal strength at the motor head. New mesh systems sometimes place their main node somewhere worse for the garage than the old router. Our garage Wi-Fi guide covers cheap fixes.
• Confirm the router's 2.4GHz band is set to WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed. A WPA3-only setting locks out many opener radios.
• Look for MAC filtering or "IoT isolation" features some new routers ship enabled; they block the opener from reaching the internet even when joined.
