Installation & Replacement

Can I replace my garage door myself?

Quick Answer

You can, but we do not recommend it. The torsion spring system stores hundreds of pounds of tension and sends thousands of DIYers to the ER every year. Add warranty voids, wind-load requirements in Oklahoma, and the two-person lift on a 150 to 350 pound door, and professional installation usually costs less than a DIY mistake.

The part that hurts people

Almost every serious DIY garage door injury traces back to one component: the springs. A wound torsion spring on a 16-foot insulated door holds enough energy to break a wrist or worse the instant a winding bar slips. Extension springs on older OKC homes are no friendlier; they fail by snapping loose, which is why they legally require containment cables. Our techs handle spring replacement daily with proper winding bars, and even they treat every wound spring like a loaded tool.

The lift itself is the second hazard. A basic non-insulated single weighs around 130 pounds; a 16x7 insulated steel door can pass 350. Sections have to be stacked plumb and level while someone holds them, and a section that tips out of the opening bends hinges, dents panels, or lands on a foot.

The costs people forget to count

  • Warranty. CHI, DoorLink, Haas, and Mid-America all condition their warranties on correct installation. A DIY install that fails in year two is usually on you.
  • Wind load. Central Oklahoma sits in a design wind region where doors need proper strut counts and jamb attachment. An improperly anchored door is the first thing to blow in during a spring storm, and insurers ask questions after a claim.
  • Tools. Winding bars, a quality level, self-tapping bits, cable clamps, and a helper for a full day. Renting or buying those eats a chunk of the labor savings.
  • Disposal. Your old door will not fit in the trash cart. Pros haul it; see who takes the old door.

What is reasonable to DIY

Plenty. Swapping the bottom weather seal, lubricating rollers and hinges, tightening track lag screws, replacing an opener's remote batteries, and painting the door face are all safe weekend work. Anything touching springs, cables, bottom brackets, or the track hardware under tension belongs to a pro. If your current door is failing rather than just old, a repair visit may cost far less than any replacement, DIY or otherwise.

Since 1994 we have priced professional installation to make the DIY math unattractive: free estimate, new tracks and springs included, haul-away, and a labor warranty. What a single door costs installed depends on size, construction, and insulation — call (405) 247-0336 for a free, no-pressure number, and financing is available.

Do I need to be home during my garage door installation?+

No, not for the entire install. Someone needs to provide access at the start, and we like a quick walkthrough at the end, but plenty of customers are at work the whole time. We can handle approval and payment by phone. Read the full answer →

Can a new garage door be installed on my old tracks?+

No. Track curvature, gauge, and bracket spacing are matched to each specific door, and reusing old tracks voids the manufacturer warranty. Every professional install includes new tracks at no separate line-item cost. Read the full answer →

Do installers haul away the old garage door?+

Yes. Haul-away of the old door, tracks, and springs is included in our installation price, and the steel gets recycled. Just tell us ahead of time if you want to keep any panels for a project. Read the full answer →
