What is UL 325 and why does it matter for automatic gates?

Quick Answer

UL 325 is the safety standard that governs automatic gate and door operators in North America. For gates it covers entrapment protection — requiring multiple independent means of detecting an obstruction — and classifies gates by the type of site they serve. A compliant installation is both a legal and a genuine safety matter.

Why the standard exists

Automatic gates move a large, heavy object along a path that people and vehicles use, often with nobody present. The standard grew out of serious injuries — particularly to children — caused by gates that closed on someone with no means of detecting them. Entrapment protection is the core of it.

The requirement is layered: the operator must have inherent entrapment protection that senses resistance, plus additional external devices such as photo eyes or sensing edges. The intent is that no single failure leaves the gate unprotected.

Gate classes

  • Class I: residential, one to four single-family dwellings.
  • Class II: commercial where general public access is expected — retail, multi-family.
  • Class III: commercial or industrial with limited access, not serving the general public.
  • Class IV: restricted access with qualified personnel and supervision.

The class drives which operator is appropriate and what protection is required. Using a residential-class operator on a site that should be Class II is a common and serious mistake.

What it means for your gate

The operator must be listed for the class of installation. The entrapment protection devices must be present, correctly installed, and working — the requirement behind whether gate safety sensors are required. And warning signage is part of a compliant installation.

Devices that have been disabled because they were nuisance-tripping are the failure we see most, and they are the exact scenario the layered requirement was written to prevent. The same logic applies as with garage door sensors, per bypassing safety sensors.

If your gate predates current requirements

Older gate installations frequently lack the protection that would be required today, particularly on properties where the use has changed — a gate installed for a single residence now serving a multi-tenant property is no longer in its original class. That is a genuine exposure for a property owner.

Retrofitting protection to an existing operator is usually straightforward, and it is worth doing regardless of whether anyone is asking. How do fire trucks get through my automatic gate in an emergency?+

Through dedicated rapid-entry hardware: a Knox key switch the fire department opens with its master key, a siren-operated sensor that opens the gate when it hears an approaching emergency yelp, or, failing those, the operator's manual release or bolt cutters. Read the full answer →

What type of operator does my commercial door need — trolley, jackshaft, or hoist?+

Let the track choose: trolley operators fit standard-lift sectional doors with horizontal ceiling track, jackshaft operators bolt to the torsion shaft for high-lift, full vertical-lift, and rolling steel doors, and hoist operators are jackshaft units with a chain-hoist backup for manually moving heavy doors during power loss.
