Going Manual: The Right Way

The opener is a convenience bolted onto a door that is fully functional without it. To switch to manual mode, close the door if possible, then pull the red release cord hanging from the rail. The trolley clicks free, and the door now moves by hand. Lift from the bottom section with both hands, keep fingers clear of the gaps between panels, and lower it under control every time. A healthy door takes about 10 to 15 pounds of effort and stays wherever you park it.

Two conditions make manual use a bad idea. First, an unbalanced door: if it takes real muscle to lift or it slides down when released, the springs are weak or broken, and hauling it up daily is both exhausting and dangerous. That door needs spring service before anything else. Second, a door that is crooked, off track, or visibly damaged should not be operated at all, by hand or motor.

The Security Gap Nobody Mentions

Here is the practical problem with living opener-free for a while: an engaged opener acts as the door's lock, because the motor and gear resist the door being shoved up from outside. Pull the release cord and that resistance is gone; anyone who can grip the bottom of the door can open it. If your opener will be out of commission for more than a day, do one of these:

• Slide the manual lock bar if your door has one (many OKC builder doors do, long forgotten under a coat of dust).
• Put a padlock or even a 3/8 bolt through one of the round holes in the vertical track just above a roller. The door physically cannot rise past it. Remove it before the next use, and make it a habit to check, because running the opener against a locked door is a classic way to strip gears.
• For detached garages, treat the service door lock as the primary security while the main door is manual.
