What happens if I keep using an unbalanced garage door?

First, confirm it: the 60-second balance test

Pull the red release cord with the door closed, then lift the door by hand to waist height and let go carefully. A balanced door hovers, or drifts an inch or two. An unbalanced door sinks fast, feels like lifting a couch, or flies upward on its own. If yours failed that test, everything below is already happening in your garage.

The slow-motion damage list

A typical steel double door in the metro weighs 130 to 200 pounds. Springs are supposed to make that weight nearly neutral so the opener only guides the door. When balance is off, here is the order things usually fail in, based on what our techs see across Oklahoma City, Edmond, and Moore:

• Opener drive gear (first 6 to 18 months). Chamberlain and LiftMaster units use a nylon main gear that strips when overloaded. The motor hums but the door does not move. A gear-kit repair with labor can run more than half the cost of a new builder-grade opener.

Why "it still opens fine" is misleading

Openers are strong enough to hide the problem for months. A 1/2 HP unit can muscle an unbalanced door up while showing only small tells: slower travel, straining sounds, the door reversing at random, or the light flashing error codes. Many homeowners first notice on a cold January morning when the stiff, dragging door finally exceeds what the opener can pull. There is also a safety-system cost. The opener's force limits are calibrated around a balanced door. Techs and DIYers sometimes crank up the force to keep an unbalanced door moving, and that setting is exactly what lets a door push hard against an obstruction, or a person, before reversing.
