Can a garage door fall suddenly, and what prevents it?
Yes. If a torsion spring snaps or a lift cable fails while the door is raised, 130 to 200 pounds of door can drop fast. Four layers prevent it: correctly rated springs, sound cables, the opener trolley holding the door on its rail, and containment cables on older extension-spring systems. Inspection keeps all four working.
How a fall actually happens
A raised sectional door is a couch's worth of steel suspended overhead, held there by spring tension transferred through cables. A fall needs a failure in that chain. The three scenarios behind nearly every dropped-door call we run in the metro:
- Spring break with the door up. Torsion springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, and Oklahoma temperature swings push tired steel over the edge; the loud bang of a breaking spring is a winter-morning classic here. With the spring gone, only the opener trolley holds the door, and it was never designed to carry full weight.
- Cable failure. Cables fray where they wrap the drums and where they anchor at the bottom brackets, both spots that rust in humid garages. One side lets go, the door drops crooked, jams or racks, and sections can kick out of the tracks.
- Manual operation after disconnecting the opener. Pull the red release with a broken spring and the door becomes dead weight in your hands. Every winter someone in the metro pulls the release during a power outage, starts lifting, and the door gets away from them. If the door feels unusually heavy on manual operation, stop and put it down slowly.
The four safety layers, and how they fail quietly

That last row deserves a callout. Extension-spring doors, common on single-car garages in Capitol Hill, original Del City, and older Midwest City housing stock, sling a broken spring across the garage like shrapnel unless a containment cable runs through the coils. Adding containment cables is a cheap upgrade we can do during any repair visit.
Warning signs a drop is getting more likely
- A visible gap in the torsion spring coils above the door (that spring is already broken).
- Frayed cable strands, or a cable that looks slack on one side.
- The door slams the last foot when closing, or feels heavy when lifted manually.
- Loud bang from the garage followed by an opener that strains or will not lift.
