What does WindCode mean on a garage door?
WindCode is Clopay's trademarked program for factory-engineered wind reinforcement, with tiers (W-1 up through W-9 and higher) that correspond to tested design pressures. It is a brand label, not an industry standard: the universal measurement underneath is design pressure in pounds per square foot, which every major manufacturer, including the CHI, Haas, DoorLink and Mid-America lines we carry, publishes for their rated doors.
Decoding the label
Each WindCode tier packages a set of upgrades: additional or heavier struts, thicker end stiles, upgraded hinges and brackets, more track fasteners, and specified jamb attachment. A W-4 door is engineered and tested to withstand higher positive and negative pressures than a W-2, and so on up the ladder. The tiers map to design pressures certified under industry test standards (ANSI/DASMA 108 is the common one), which simulate wind pushing on the door and, just as important, sucking outward on it. Suction is what pops rollers from tracks, so negative-pressure numbers matter as much as positive.
Translating across brands
Since WindCode is Clopay's marketing wrapper, cross-shopping means finding the number under the name:
- Design pressure (DP), in PSF: the real spec. A door rated +24/-27 PSF withstands roughly a 130 mph-class wind event depending on exposure and opening size.
- Wind speed ratings: some brands state mph directly, but mph only means something alongside exposure category and door size, so treat it as shorthand.
- Engineering sheets: every legitimately rated door ships with documentation specifying its required track, struts, and fastener schedule. No paperwork, no rating.

What central Oklahoma actually requires
Most metro jurisdictions build to standard IRC wind provisions, which rated doors satisfy easily. A rated door is a tested assembly, and the test assumes the specified struts, track, and jamb fasteners are installed exactly per the engineering sheet into sound framing. A W-6 door hung with the wrong lags into a cracked jamb performs like whatever it's actually attached to.
