What has to be checked before anyone builds
Carports were engineered to hold up a roof, not to carry walls, a header, and a 250-pound moving door. Before a conversion pencils out, three things get verified:
- The posts and roof structure. A site-built carport with 4x4 or steel posts on real footings usually converts well. A bolted-together aluminum awning carport does not; those get replaced rather than enclosed.
