The three construction tiers, compared side by side
Manufacturers build the same door style three ways, and the step between tiers is remarkably consistent across the brands we install:

Polyurethane is injected as foam that bonds to both steel skins, which roughly doubles insulating performance per inch versus glued-in polystyrene sheets and makes the door noticeably stiffer and quieter.
What the extra money buys in an Oklahoma garage
- Summer. An uninsulated steel door facing west is a radiator. Attached garages in Moore and Mustang routinely hit 110 to 120 degrees behind one in July; an R-12+ door typically holds the same garage 15 to 20 degrees cooler, which matters if a bedroom sits above it.
- Winter. During an ice-storm cold snap, an insulated door keeps the garage 20 to 30 degrees above outside temps, protecting water heaters, pipes and anything stored out there.
- Durability. The foam core acts as a backer, so light hail that dimples a single-skin panel often leaves a sandwich door unmarked. Given how often metro roofs meet hail, that alone has saved customers a panel claim.
- Noise and rigidity. Three-layer doors flex less in our south winds, rattle less in the track, and run quieter under the opener.
When to skip the upgrade
Honesty cuts both ways: on a detached, unheated garage used purely for parking, or a rental where you will never feel the utility bill, a single-layer door does the job and saves real money. Everywhere else, especially garages that share a wall or ceiling with living space, we quote insulated as the default.
