Can I paint my garage door, and will it affect the warranty?

Quick Answer

Yes, most steel and wood doors can be repainted, and done properly it looks excellent. Two cautions: check your finish warranty first, since some manufacturers limit coverage once a factory finish is painted over, and think hard about going much darker than the original in this climate — a dark door on a west elevation gets extremely hot.

Check the warranty before the paint store

Factory finishes on steel doors are applied under conditions you cannot reproduce in a driveway, and manufacturers warrant them accordingly — often for many years against fading, chalking, and peeling. Painting over that finish commonly ends the finish portion of the warranty, while leaving structural and hardware coverage intact.

That is not a reason not to paint. It is a reason to read the document first, especially on a door that is only a few years old. The broader warranty landscape is in how garage door warranties compare and what lifetime warranties actually cover.

Color choice matters more here than most places

An Oklahoma summer afternoon puts serious heat into a west or south-facing door, and dark colors absorb far more of it. Surface temperatures on a dark door can climb well beyond what the panel was designed around, which over years contributes to finish degradation and, on some constructions, panel distortion. The full picture is in whether dark garage doors warp.

It also heats the garage itself, which undoes part of what an insulated door is for — the seasonal case made in how much cooler an insulated door keeps a garage. Going a shade or two darker is usually fine. Going from almond to near-black on a west elevation deserves a second thought.

Doing it so it lasts

  • Clean thoroughly. Degrease, then rinse. Skip the pressure washer unless you have read whether pressure washing a garage door is safe — it drives water into places it should not go.
  • Scuff the factory finish. Fresh paint does not bond to a slick cured coating without it.
  • Prime bare steel and any rust. Treat rust properly rather than painting over it.
  • Use exterior acrylic latex rated for metal. Oil-based enamels go brittle in our temperature swings.
  • Work out of direct sun and well inside the product's temperature range — a hot panel flashes the paint before it levels.

What not to paint

Keep paint off the weatherstripping, the rollers and their stems, the hinge pins, the track interiors, the springs, and the cables. Paint on a track or a roller stem creates drag that the whole system then has to overcome, and paint on a spring traps moisture against the steel rather than protecting it.

Also be realistic about the door's condition. Paint hides surface rust for a season and then it comes back through, and a door with rusted-through sections or cracked panels needs the repairs in a rusted bottom section or a cracked panel before any cosmetics. If the door is far enough along that paint is a rescue attempt, our installation team can price the alternative — free, with financing available.

Can I pressure wash my garage door?+

You can, but you should not. Even 1,500 PSI at close range chips factory paint edges, dents 25-gauge panel steel, and drives water into section seams, window frames, and past the weather seals. Read the full answer →

Which garage door brands have the best warranties?+

CHI and Haas offer the strongest paperwork: lifetime warranties on sections, rust-through, and delamination for as long as you own the home on their premium insulated lines. Amarr and Clopay are comparable on top models but drop off quickly on budget doors. Read the full answer →
