Does a 16-foot garage door need reinforcement struts?
Yes. Every 16-foot door needs at least one strut on the top section where the opener arm attaches, and in central Oklahoma's wind environment two to four struts across the door is the smarter spec. Struts added at build time are cheap insurance against a folded top panel or a storm-buckled door.
What a strut actually does
A strut is a U-shaped or ribbed steel channel screwed horizontally across the inside face of a door section. On a 16-foot span, a bare 24-gauge steel section is a long, floppy beam. The strut turns it into a stiff one. That stiffness matters in three separate situations:
- Opener pull. The operator arm yanks the top section from its center. Without a strut backing it, the section hinges around the attachment point and eventually creases. A folded top panel is one of our most common single-section calls, and it is entirely preventable.
- Wind loading. A 60 mph gust puts roughly 9 to 10 pounds per square foot on the door face; a 16x7 door catches over 1,000 pounds of distributed load. Struts carry that load to the tracks and jambs instead of letting sections bow inward.
- Horizontal travel. When the door lies flat overhead, gravity sags unsupported wide sections between rollers. Years of that sag works fasteners loose and telegraphs a wavy look you can see from the street.

Can struts be added to an existing door?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest structural upgrades in the business. Adding a strut to a sagging top section, including rebalancing for the added 15 to 25 pounds, is a routine, budget-friendly repair call. Two caveats. First, weight: every strut makes the door heavier, and springs must be re-torqued or resized to match, or you trade a sag problem for a strained opener; that interaction is covered in how openers and door weight relate. Second, a section that is already creased cannot be strutted back to health; steel that has folded has lost its column strength, and that section needs replacing. If your wide door hums and oil-cans in March winds, have it looked at before storm season peaks. A strut added in February is a service call; a buckled door in May is a claim.
