Is a garage door warranty transferable when I sell the house?
Often not, or not in full. Many manufacturer warranties run to the original purchaser at the original address and either end at sale or convert to a shorter term for a subsequent owner. Some transfer with notification and a fee. Read the specific document — and if you are buying, do not assume any coverage survived.
Why warranties are written this way
Manufacturer warranties are a commitment to the person who bought the product, and extending that indefinitely to every future owner changes the exposure considerably. So the common structures are: coverage ends at sale, coverage converts to a shorter term for a subsequent owner, or coverage transfers if the new owner registers within a window and sometimes pays a fee.
Labor coverage, where it exists at all, is the part most likely to disappear first — a recurring theme across this category, per what lifetime warranties really cover.
If you are selling
- Find the documentation. Invoice, model and serial numbers, warranty paperwork — registering the warranty.
- Check the transfer terms and whether they require action before or after closing.
- Hand it all over. It is a genuine selling point on a recent door.
- Do not overstate it. "Warranty may be transferable, here is the paperwork" is accurate; "it's under warranty" may not be.
If you are buying
Assume nothing transferred until you have read the document. A door that looks new is not necessarily covered, and the components most likely to need attention — springs and the opener — are frequently the least covered even for original owners, per whether springs are covered.
Ask the seller for the paperwork during the transaction rather than after. And get the door assessed on its own merits rather than relying on paper, which is the argument in inspecting the door before you buy.
The other handover item
Access. Warranty paperwork is the paperwork half; the security half is the remotes and codes, which do not expire at closing. Wipe every paired remote and re-add only yours, change the keypad code, and remove the previous owner from any app — erasing all remotes and removing previous owner app access.
That takes a few minutes and closes a gap most new owners never think about, per making a garage door more secure. Our OKC team can do the access reset and a condition assessment in one visit — free estimates.

Usually, but the fine print matters. New-door manufacturer warranties typically cover springs 1 to 3 years (some premium lines go 10), installers add their own parts-and-labor terms, and high-cycle replacement springs often carry longer coverage. Read the full answer →
