How many quotes should I get before replacing my garage door?
Two or three quotes from established local companies is the right number. Fewer and you have no benchmark; more and you are comparing noise. The catch: quotes only mean something when they spec the same steel gauge, insulation R-value, spring cycle rating, and warranty. A vague one-line total is a red flag by itself.
Why three quotes can show three different products
Garage door quotes fail buyers because two bids that both say "16x7 insulated steel door installed" can be worlds apart on total and both be fairly priced for what they include. The spread hides in the specs. Make every bidder answer these on paper:
- Steel gauge: 24-gauge skins resist Oklahoma hail dents far better than 27 or 28. Ask for the number, not the word "heavy-duty."
- Construction: single-layer pan door, vinyl-backed double layer, or steel-back sandwich? A sandwich door is stiffer, quieter, and more dent-resistant.
- Insulation: polystyrene around R-6 to R-9, or injected polyurethane at R-12 to R-18? Matters most on attached garages in our climate.
- Springs: 10,000-cycle springs are the industry minimum and last 7 to 10 years of average use. 25,000-cycle or higher is a modest add-on to the job and lasts decades. Our spring techs replace far too many builder-minimum springs at year six.
- Wind rating: in central Oklahoma, ask whether the door and strut package carries a wind-load rating, and what happens to the price if you add it.
- Warranty split: factory warranty on sections versus the installer's labor warranty. Labor is the one that gets exercised.
Red flags that end a conversation early
- A price by phone without anyone measuring, then a different price on site. Legitimate site-unseen numbers are ranges, not promises.
- No physical local address or a truck with no company name. Storm-chaser installers surge into OKC after every big hail event and are gone by the warranty's first birthday.

- Pressure to sign today for a "today-only" discount. Doors are not concert tickets.

Collect the two or three bids within the same week so pricing conditions match, and give each company the same door target: size, insulation level, windows or not, color. Then weigh the total against the spring cycles, gauge, and labor warranty side by side.
