Can just the bottom section of a garage door be replaced?

Quick Answer

Yes, if the manufacturer still produces your panel design. A bottom section swap costs far less than a full door replacement in the OKC market. The deciding factors are panel availability, whether more than one section is damaged, and how much life the rest of the door has left.

Why bottom sections die first

The bottom section lives the hardest life on the door. It carries the bottom brackets where the cables attach, sits against wet concrete every time rain blows under the seal, takes the bumper taps, and absorbs the sprinkler overspray. In OKC we replace bottom sections for three dominant reasons: rust-out along the bottom rail on doors from the 2000s, backing-into-it damage, and water wicking into wood-composite doors in older neighborhoods like Mesta Park. If your bottom panel looks bad but the door runs fine, a section swap is very much on the table alongside a standard repair visit.

When a section swap makes sense, and when it does not

  • Good candidate: door under 12 years old, one damaged section, panel design still in production, hardware healthy. CHI and DoorLink sections for current models order in about one to three weeks.
  • Marginal: door 12 to 20 years old. The section may still be orderable, but color fade means the new panel will read brighter than its neighbors until it weathers in, usually a season or two. Acceptable on a north-facing door, obvious on a west-facing one.
  • Poor candidate: discontinued embossment pattern, two or more damaged sections, or rust creeping up multiple panels. Section pricing stacks up fast; at two sections you are typically at 60 to 70 percent of a full door replacement without a new-door warranty, and at that point replacing the whole thing is the honest recommendation.

What the job involves

What a section swap costs comes down to door width (an 8 or 9 ft section versus a 16 ft), whether the section is non-insulated or an insulated sandwich build, and how quickly the manufacturer can supply your panel design. A free estimate pins the number down before any work starts.

The swap itself takes about an hour: the tech releases spring tension, disconnects cables from the bottom brackets, slides the old section out, transfers or replaces hinges and the bottom seal, and re-tensions. Because the springs must be unloaded and rewound, this is not a DIY job; bottom brackets are under direct cable tension and are the single most dangerous bolt-on part of the door, the same hazard we flag in the DIY replacement answer.

One more Oklahoma note: if the damage came from hail or wind, photograph it before any work and call your insurer. Storm claims routinely cover full door replacement rather than a section, and adjusters here see enough hail damage to process these quickly. We can document the damage during a free estimate either way.

Can I make my garage door opening taller for a lifted truck?+

Yes, with header framing and a taller door, most commonly going from 7 to 8 feet. Ceiling height decides how far you can go. It is a framing-plus-door project priced by the header work and the taller door. Read the full answer →

Does a 16-foot garage door need reinforcement struts?+

Yes, at minimum one on the top section, and more for wind resistance in central Oklahoma. Without struts, wide sections bow when the opener pulls or when storm gusts load the door face. Read the full answer →

Can a carport be converted into a garage with a door?+

Yes. The carport gets framed walls and a proper header, then we install the door. Metro cities treat it as an enclosure project needing a permit, with the framing, header, and door each contributing to the budget. Read the full answer →
