Can I make my garage door opening taller for a lifted truck?

Start with two tape measurements

Before pricing anything, measure your truck and your garage. Trucks first: a Ram 2500 on a 6-inch lift with a light bar can stand 7 feet 4 inches or taller, and antennas add more. Then the garage: floor to ceiling at the opening and floor to ceiling in the middle of the bay. The rule of thumb is that the new opening height plus about 12 inches of headroom for track and springs must fit under the ceiling, though a low-headroom kit can shave that, as described in our low-headroom options. Many newer builds in Piedmont, Newcastle, and Deer Creek carry 10-foot garage ceilings, which makes an 8-foot door easy. A 60s ranch in Warr Acres with an 8-foot ceiling cannot go past its existing 7-foot door without reframing the roofline, which is a different conversation.

What the conversion involves

• Structural framing. The existing header comes out and a new one goes in higher, with shoring while the wall is open. On brick homes the masonry above the opening needs a lintel adjustment. Permits apply in every metro city.
• New door and full hardware. An 8-foot-tall door is not your 7-foot door with a hat; it has more sections or taller ones, longer vertical track, recalculated springs, and usually a strut package. This is a complete installation, and an 8-foot door in a 16-foot width costs more than the 7-foot version of the same model, with construction layers, insulation and wind rating setting where it lands.
• Opener adjustments. Longer rail or a wall-mount jackshaft unit, plus new travel limits. If your opener is old, this is the natural moment to upgrade; see keeping an old opener.

Cheaper alternatives worth ruling out first

Two half-measures come up in every one of these conversations, and honesty requires covering them:

• High-lift track raises where the door travels inside the garage, which helps car-lift owners, but it does nothing for the opening height. If the truck cannot clear the header, high-lift solves the wrong problem.
• Removing the header trim and stop molding buys an inch, sometimes two. If you are only an inch short, we can often re-trim the opening and adjust the seal during a normal service visit, a fraction of the cost of a framing project. Worth checking before anyone cuts studs.
