Why some companies charge and some do not
A trip fee is not automatically a red flag. Fuel, a truck and a trained tech cost real money, and a fee filters out tire-kickers. The trouble starts when the fee is hidden until arrival, or when it quietly becomes a diagnostic fee plus a trip fee plus a fuel surcharge. Companies that quote free, on the other hand, absorb the visit cost into their volume, betting that honest quotes win enough jobs to cover the drives that do not convert. What a legitimate free estimate includes
Free should not mean thin. When we come out, the estimate visit covers:
- A physical inspection of springs, cables, rollers, track, panels and opener, not a glance from the driveway
- A written, itemized quote for the repair, honored for the work described
- The option to fix it on the spot, since trucks carry common parts; most repairs finish the same visit
- Zero charge if you decline, think it over or get other bids

Phone questions that reveal the pricing model
Thirty seconds of questions prevents most billing surprises. Ask these before booking anyone in the metro:
- Is the estimate free, and is that still true if I do not proceed?

- Does the answer change after hours? Some free-estimate companies quietly suspend the policy at 5 p.m.; ours holds 24/7, as covered in our after-hours answer.
- Will the quote be in writing before work starts?
